Abstract

Based on a critical perspective of traditional, pathogenic approaches to mental health this article discusses the possibility of public spaces as facilitators of well-being and mental health. The article contextualizes some of the flaws of traditional approaches to mental health with its emphasis on drug prescription and consumption. A contextualization of hedonic and eudaemonic well-being along with the concept of public space are described. Key characteristics for public space that prompt well-being such as diversity, accessibility, and active living are described in the context of recent findings from a research team on well-being at the School of Psychology, Universidad de Costa Rica. The paper emphasizes active mobility as triggering healthy behaviors within the framework of a vibrant and diverse public space, somewhat different from what has happened in many communities in Costa Rica. It concludes that public spaces stimulate flexibility, empathy, curiosity, focused attention, openness to novel experiences, skills for delaying gratification, and a safe framework for expressing personal energy and individual potential.
