Abstract

Burnout syndrome is a work-related health issue that particularly affects teachers. Lack of social support at work and motivation to help have been identified as predictors of Burnout. Main purpose was to assess the development process of Burnout according to Gil-Monte’s model (2005), taking into consideration social support at work and motivation to help as antecedents and health problems as consequences in a sample of Mexican primary school teachers. 698 non-university Mexican teachers were evaluated using the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI), the “Communal Orientation” scale, and the UNIPSICO Questionnaire for Social Support and Health Problems. Social support and Motivation to help showed significant negative effects on Burnout, with significant mediating effects of Indolence on Guilt and Health problems. Empirical support was obtained for Gil-Monte’s (2005) Burnout model. Interventions should be developed to promote social support and motivation to help among Mexican teachers.
